Do I need to be an experienced singer?
Not at all. You can participate in Vocal Meditation no matter what level
of singing experience or skill you have.
Does it matter if I miss a week?
No—each session stands alone. That way, you can drop in any week. You are welcome
to come any time!
How much does it cost?
Sessions are offered on a "pay what you can" basis. Details on how to donate
are provided upon registration.
How can I find out about future sessions?
If you join the Vocal Meditation e-mail list, you will get announcements of any new dates.
What is a Vocal Meditation session like?
A typical session will start with a breathing exercise and then move into gentle sounding (like humming and toning). We do some free expression as well as call and response. Then we move into more structured chants or songs, often with words. The overall progression is structured to bring your focus to the present moment, and leave you both grounded and energized.
Will other people be able to hear me?
In live sessions, YES. Exploring the voice is encouraged and supported. We focus on discovering what music we can create in a group, rather than what is "right" or "wrong." If you are shy about your voice, you can choose to sing & blend with the group, or sit back and listen when needed. Invitations may be given for soloing or improvising on your own, but you can pass or accept, depending on your comfort level.
On Zoom, NO! Internet technology does not yet allow people to sing together in real time. (Try singing "Happy Birthday" with a group of people on Zoom, and you'll see what we mean.) For this reason, all participants are ON MUTE during Vocal Meditation sessions, and you will sing along with Jane. So—you will hear Jane and yourself singing, that's it!
Some people actually find this allows MORE freedom to sing freely
than when sessions are held in person. :-)
